Piedras is a friendly first step into washed-rind cheese: savory and aromatic without going full funk. Made from high-quality Wisconsin sheep’s milk, Piedras is Blakesville Creamery’s homage to the cheeses of Spain. It's smooth and pudgy, with an intense buttery richness. Get closer to the rind, and you'll find notes of fresh sourdough, toasted nuts, and a little fruit on the finish. This award winner is especially good with sweet Effie’s Oatcakes and tangy B&R Farms Dried Apricot Spread.
“Blakesville is one of my favorite creameries out there—they work magic on sheep's and goat's milk, and Piedras one of their best. I had to close my eyes when I first tried it, the texture was so incredible."
Pasteurized Sheep's Milk, Rennet, Cultures, Salt
- Piedras offers a delicious introduction to two potentially intimidating cheese worlds at once: washed rinds and sheep’s milk cheeses. It delivers plenty of savory character without becoming overly funky or gamy.
- The texture is exceptionally uniform and smooth, with a plush, pudgy paste and slightly tacky rind.
- Aromas of yeast and freshly baked bread become more concentrated toward the rind, while the paste leans buttery, nutty, and deeply savory, with a subtle fruity note on the finish.
- For an adventurous bite, try Piedras with salt-and-vinegar potato chips and a drizzle of hot honey.
- Blakesville Creamery of Port Washington, Wisconsin, is a farmstead creamery—their cheeses are made by hand on the same farm where their goats are raised and milked.
- The farm was originally called Lake Breeze, but they changed the name in 2019 to honor the village that was previously located at that site.
- They began making cheese in 2020, now operating out of a 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art creamery where they craft their naturally ripened cheeses.
- Lynde Uihlein, Blakesville Creamery’s owner, is dedicated to thoughtful land use and environmental protection, particularly through her organization The Brico Fund.
